Cycling routes in County Mayo

County Mayo has attractive countryside, impressive coastal scenery and a rich heritage, which make it an ideal location for cycling. There are some wonderful cycle routes with varying degrees of difficulty, so there should be something for most abilities.

There is a traffic free route, known as the Great Western Greenway, which runs between Westport and Achill. This cycling and walking route was developed on the site of the old Westport to Achill railway line, which is approximately twenty-five miles in total. There are three main sections of the cycle route, which is suitable for people with moderate fitness levels.

The third biggest county in Ireland boasts one of the best walking paths around. Take a stroll through some of Ireland’s most stunning countryside while taking in the cultural sights of small villages such as Louisburgh, Lahardane and Westport.

The county is also famed for its fishing spots where anglers come all year round to lakes and rivers in the North of the county. Jack Charlton the former manager of the Irish soccer team can be spotted fishing in the River Moy around Ballina during the summer months.

The Great Western Greenway at Westport is a good location for walking and biking. The routes are well signposted and there are some wonderful views of Clew Bay to enjoy. The trail is more than twenty-five miles in total, leading from Westport to Achill. Bikes can be hired in the local area.
